Here’s an excerpt from the article, “Is Your Horse A Donkey?” A training article that helps all riders address one of the most common problems they face, keeping the horse in front of the leg.

“No offence to donkeys intended in the title of this article but having grown up owning and riding one as my first riding mount as a child, I can vouch that on the average day a donkey is not the most forward of creatures. This is not to say I did not become proficient in spurring my wee beastie into action. Not with the use of spurs however, instead opportunities for motivating my steed were utilized when we would meet a noble equine on that most wonderful of systems, the British Bridleways. I would kick my donkey on and urge him to ‘follow that horse’. He would gamely trot or canter on, and duly followed the larger creature as far as he could manage before becoming winded or losing interest in the chase. We traversed many miles of rolling fields and sandy tracks through the ancient forest lands of rural Buckinghamshire as a result. Much to the chagrin of the riders on the horses, whose mounts were often not happy to be lead horse in this endeavor and could become spooked and hard to control as a result.

It was with great glee I would exchange rides on my donkey ‘Sage’, with other kids who had ponies. I would usually find the innocent recipient of this arrangement just where I left them when the exchange had been made, trying desperately to get the donkey to move. Meantime I would be off cantering over logs and enjoying the most beautiful of rides, the forward variety. I was a very naughty girl! But I would do anything to ride a horse.

Eventually I had paid my dues and was given my first horse. I’m sure my donkey was relieved. He lived a happy life in semi-retirement thereafter, with periodic calls to service to give donkey rides at a church fête or local horse event and he lived to a ripe old age of 38 years. Perhaps the penance for my childhood naughtiness was the long hours I spent on both hot sunny and cold rainy days leading my donkey back and forth for children to enjoy their first rides.

But sometimes even the horse or pony is reticent to move properly forward of the leg and to maintain the forward gait, and riders find their horse or pony behaves like a donkey. The animal becomes unwilling to go forward of the leg or to transition to a faster gait. Sometimes the noble beast will not only demonstrate a dislike of moving in a forward direction but frequently stop and misbehave by spinning, crow hopping or bucking and rearing.

I commiserate with the rider who finds their horse exhibits this behavior. This is not a fun ride for anyone. But here is how to solve this dilemma in a few easy steps.”
