Reading Horses: Interpreting Emotional and Communicative Behavior
Every horse communicates with its handler, but not every handler knows how to interpret what they are saying. In Julie Goodnight’s latest podcast episode of Ride On with Julie Goodnight, she talks about how to recognize what horses are thinking, what emotions they are feeling, and what they are trying to communicate to us and to each other. “Horses are quite transparent, offering us ample clues to their thoughts and emotions,” says Goodnight. “Once you understand what you are looking for, and learn to interpret their postures, gestures, and audible communications, reading the horse is easy!”
Goodnight talks about understanding the herd and prey mentality, and how that contributes to the horse’ behavior and communication.
“Just like with humans, if you seek to understand and interpret someone’s actions, you must first listen and observe before opening your mouth and interjecting your own point of view,” says Goodnight. “It is essential to practice listening to horses if we are going to communicate clearly with them on their playing field.”
