Quarter Horse News (QHN) was recently recognized for journalistic excellence with two first-place finishes in the American Horse Publications (AHP) Equine Media Awards contest. It is the second year in a row the media brand’s print magazine, which includes the Quarter Horse News Stallion Register and the Quarter Horse News Spring Edition, has earned the General Excellence Award in its category.
The Fort Worth, Texas-based media brand, which publishes quarterhorsenews.com and the two annual print editions, also won two first-place awards for news feature writing. The awards were announced Saturday, May 18, at the AHP’s annual conference in Lexington, Kentucky. The event honored writing published in print and online in 2023.
“Our staff spends countless hours ensuring that we live up to our mission of being the complete source of information for the Western performance horse industry,” says Director of Western Brands Dani Licklider. “It’s a testament to our team and all those that contribute to our brand to bring home these significant achievements. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Amy Olson, QHN Digital Editor, won first place in News Reporting Related Feature Single Article for “Equine Syndicates: The Future of High Dollar Horses,” which was published June 8, 2023, on quarterhorsenews.com.
New to the role of digital editor, Olson has been at QHN since April of 2023 and was a freelance equine journalist prior to her employment at QHN. Her winning article explored how equine syndicates can provide a lower cost option for horse ownership, and how syndicates can function differently in multiple disciplines. The two editions included in the award were the 2023 QHN Stallion Register and the 2023 Spring Edition, which featured Lindy Burch on the cover. This is the second year in a row that Quarter Horse News has been honored to receive the award.
“The Quarter Horse News issues are beautifully designed. They work closely toward the mission of the publication. The layout and design effectively raise awareness and interest in breeding resources. The design is also clean and professional,” judges’ feedback from 2023 said.
