Why might you and your horse need help from a professional trainer in the first place? Julie Goodnight delves into this complicated question and what to expect on the latest episode of Ride On with Julie Goodnight.
“I’m often asked to recommend a trainer or how to find a trainer, but the world’s too big for me to know all the trainers in every discipline,” says Goodnight. “I think it’s important that people seek help when they need it, and that people have the information they need to find and evaluate a trainer, and make sure it’s the right fit for you and your horse.”
Goodnight goes into how you find a trainer that is right for you, what type of trainer will best benefit you and your horse, and the investment in time and money you can expect for different areas of training.
“Since there are not any licensing requirements or regulations for horse trainers to follow, it’s up to the horse owner to do their homework to find the right fit,” says Goodnight. There are many types of horse trainers out there, and you need to understand what type of trainer you need and what you can reasonably expect from your investment.”
Regardless of the choice of trainer, Goodnight explains that the work isn’t finished when the horse comes home, and shares what horse owners need to know so they can maintain the hard work the trainer put in.
“Whether we’re talking about a basic education for your horse, finish training, fixing problems, or preparing for competition, there may come a time when you need help,” says Goodnight.
