Wild Cards and World Champions at Road to the Horse 2023

Road to the Horse has created a tradition of showcasing superior colt starters who exemplify the highest principles of colt starting. Year after year, the event brings together diverse talent from across the equine industry to battle it out for $125,000 and the coveted title — World Champion of Colt Starting. The 2023 Championship Competitor lineup represents a unique blend of past Road to the Horse World Champions and top up-and-coming Wild Card competitors. Defending 2022 World Champion Mike Major and 2021 Wild Card Champion Cole Cameron will join fellow competitors Guy McLean and JR Robles, to complete the lineup at the Kentucky Horse Park on March 23-26, 2023.

“This is a world championship race that will keep you on the edge of your seat,” states Morris Equine Group President Tina Battock. “With an even mix of past champions and trainers who rose through the Wild Card Challenge, this lineup is packed with talent. Each competitor brings such a unique skillset to the event. We couldn’t be more excited to watch how this story unfolds.”

After a ten-year hiatus from the prestigious colt starting event, two-time Road to the Horse World Champion Guy McLean will return as a competitor, chasing his third title. McLean hopes to join the record books, alongside Chris Cox — the only competitor who has earned more than two World Championship of Colt Starting titles.

Additionally, Mike Major is no stranger to the winner’s circle. A multiple AQHA Ranch Versatility World Champion, Road to the Horse fans witnessed Major partner with the 6666 Ranch bred colt, YELLOWHOUSE CANYON to take the title at Road to the Horse 2022.

Road to the Horse 2021 Wild Card Challenge Champion Cole Cameron, will work to follow in his father’s footsteps as he competes for his first event title. Cameron’s father Craig claimed the Road to the Horse 2010 World Championship title and Cameron aims to take the coveted Gist Silversmiths buckle home at Road to the Horse 2023.

Most recently, JR Robles secured his place as a Championship Competitor by taking the win at the Road to the Horse Wild Card Challenge on September 22-25 in Fort Worth, Texas. The win secured Robles’ invitation to the world championship event in Kentucky.
