Seasoned equine journalist and communicator Kate Bradley Byars has rejoined the freelance creative world in 2022. Byars, an award-winning writer and photographer through American Horse Publications, is accepting freelance assignments through Kate B Creative, where she provides writing, photography and branding services.
“After spending time focusing on reined cow horse communications, I’m eager to jump back into telling stories about all of the people and events in the Western performance industry, both visually and through my writing,” Byars said. “Stock horses are my passion, and I also look forward to helping trainers and others in the equine industry share their passions with customers.”
Byars had served as communications manager for the National Reined Cow Horse Association since February 2021 and continues to serve as NRCHA’s Reined Cow Horse News editor. Previously, Byars worked with Morris Communications magazines Western Horseman, Quarter Horse News and Barrel Horse News. She is also a contributor to the National Reining Horse Association’s magazine, The Reiner.
“After years of working together, Kate is one of my most trusted freelancers,” said Kelsey Hruska, Quarter Horse News editorial director and editor of The Reiner. “A sincere team player, she always strives to go above and beyond the basics of an assignment. Her knowledge and experience in the horse industry inform her writing in a way few equine journalists can achieve.”
Byars’ insightful writing has been published in many magazines outside the Morris family, including the American Quarter Horse Association Journal, American Paint Horse Association’s Journal and Chrome, Horse & Rider and Horse Illustrated. Her clear, inventive photographic images have been published commercially as well as in print for companies such as Rios of Mercedes and Anderson Bean boots, Aaron Ranch and K Bar J Leather.
“Kate isn’t just a writer,” said freelancer Larri Jo Starkey. “She understands the equine industry because she is part of it as a competitor herself. She lives the life she has been writing and photographing. That kind of authenticity makes Kate special in the freelance community.”
With co-founder Abigail Boatwright, the two share their philosophies of freelance work and have industry guests on The Freelance Remuda podcast, which launched in 2018. The podcast and blog bring an educational element as well as showcase the voices of today’s equine media industry.
