We’ve all heard it before—no hoof, no horse—but for many horse owners, the hoof is shrouded in mystery. To help horse owners everywhere gain a better understanding of the hoof, Julie Goodnight talks with renowned leader in equine podiatry, Dr. Barbara T. Page, DVM, on the latest episode of her podcast, Ride On with Julie Goodnight. (JulieGoodnight.com/Podcast)
“I had several ‘aha’ moments listening to Dr. Page,” says Goodnight. “I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to look at horses’ feet the same way again!”
In this episode, Page shares what inspired her career, how she applies her decades of research on feral horses to domestic horses, practical tips, and more—including the best thing horse owners can do for their horses’ hoof health and disease prevention.
Additionally, Page gives clear explanations about the structure, balance, and efficiency of the equine hoof, accompanied by illustrative photographs provided to listeners in the episode show notes. (JulieGoodnight.com/Hoof-Presentation)
“The equine foot is my passion,” says Page. “For the first 13 years as a veterinarian (1977-1990), my veterinary career was diverse. Since 1990, my passion has been the foot.”
Page became the first woman to practice equine veterinary medicine in Colorado in 1977, and founded the International Foundation for Equine Podiatry Research (IFEPR) in 1994. The IFEPR focuses on continued research and innovations regarding the equine foot, as well as providing educational resources to the equine community.
“Horse owners tend to abdicate their horses’ hoof health to the farrier, but Dr. Page tells us how important it is for horse owners to stay informed and have a discerning eye,” says Goodnight.
