Jackson’s Paddock Paradise & Hooves Built, Not Carved

Building horses from the ground up is becoming a popular challenge. Jamie Jackson conceived of a management or boarding concept based on the lifestyles of the naturally healthy U.S. Great Basin wild horses. His ‘Paddock Paradise’ helps horse owners provide an environment that more closely resembles a horse’s natural habitat. Debbie Roberts Loucks interviewed Jaime for the second time on Horsemanship Radio to catch up with how his concept is growing.

“Our 194th episode of Horsemanship Radio is one of the most important we’ve done,” said Loucks. “We explore the subject of whether we are helping our horses build their feet with every step or are we breaking them down. Immediate functionality vs. sustainability.”

Jaime Jackson has been a professional hoof care practitioner since the 1970s, and in the 1980s he conducted studies of the lifestyles and hooves of U.S. Great Basin wild, free-roaming horses. This changed his career path forever to become a pioneer as a non-traditional, natural hoof care practitioner. This transition culminated in his first book, The Natural Horse: Lessons From the Wild in 1992, updated in 2020. Other written works by Jaime are currently used by the Institute For the Study Natural Horse Care Practices (ISNHCP) to train students in the artful science of natural hoof care.

In 2005, he wrote the book Paddock Paradise: A Guide to Natural Horse Boarding to help horse owners create habitats for their horses that simulate the wilderness experience of this species.

Our second guest, farrier clinician David Landreville, quickly learned that there was a difference between just leaving the shoes off of a horse and promoting a good bare foot. Rebuilding hooves has been his focus now for over 15 years. Landreville turned to barefoot trimming after coming very close to having to euthanize his horse, Santo, whom he had been shoeing for a little over a year at the time.  He was always fascinated by shoeing, it requires much of the craftsmanship skills that are developed in other trades, but the application can be a matter of life and death for the horse. David desperately searched for ways to change the predicted outcome for Santo. He quickly learned that there was a difference between just leaving the shoes off of a horse and promoting a good bare foot. This has been his focus now for over 15 years: rebuilding hooves.
